Lets Discuss Verb Definition and Meanings

Suppose I am lying on the bed and missing someone. I might think of doing so physical work but still I must remember that my brain is functioning, hence such a work “miss”, even if being performed by my brain, is also considered as a verb.

Verb, Definition and Meanings, is the one, which describes the action or the state of the subject.

For Examples:

Bilawal is sleeping.

Bilawal is doing work of “Sleeping” so it is a verb.”Ing” defines the present continuous tense.

Ahsan is 23 years old.

Here “is” as a verb, now you must be thinking what kind of verb is it?

I tell you, it is a main verb here as there is no main verb in the sentence if it was given main verb in the sentence like, sit, fight, become, get, then it would be considered as a helping verb in the sentence.

Types of Verb

1) Main Verb/ Dynamic Verb

Dynamic Verbs also called (action verbs) describe specific, temporary action or event.

Main verb describes the action of the subject such as to fight, to dance, to sing, to think, to read, to write, to see, to move, to beat etc.

Note;

Action doesn’t mean the physical work. When you think, your brain works so, “to think” is also action, hence it is a verb.

2) Helping/ Auxiliary Verb

They are used in combination with another ( main verb ) to modify its meaning.

Auxiliary verbs can be used to indicate tense, mood and voice.

They also used in negative form with words such as “not” and “never”.

When main verb is given in the sentence, made by using any tense form in the sentence, then “is, am ,are, was, were do, does, has, have, had, did, will” works as a helping verb or auxiliary in the sentence.

For Examples:

Is, am, are, was, were, has, have, did, had and will.

Bilawal is writing an article.

Ahsan was coming home.

Bilawal will qualify for CSS with flying colours.

Mohan didn’t do the best.

Hifza has done a great job.

Here “is, was, will, has, did” are the helping verbs in the following sentences and “come, qualify, do, done” are the main verbs in mentioned sentences.
