What is an Adverb: Adverbs are the words or a clause ( group of words) that show the quality of verb, adjective or another adverb or provide some additional information about them.
In other words, An Adverb describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
Examples
Let’s understand with the help of a few examples.
Bilawal runs fast.
When we add the word “fast”, It describes the verb “Run”. Hence the word “fast” is an adverb.
Sehrish studies till late.
When we add the word “till late”, It describes the verb “Studies”. Hence the word “till late” is an adverb.
Concept of “S” and “-ies”
Verb “Study” is written by adding “-ies” as Sehrish is singular noun and singular noun takes”-ies” when consonant letters are used before “Y” when it comes to verb. Here “d” is consonant letter.
If I write or say ” She buys an apple” here I have added only “s” with singular pronoun as it is used “u” before Y and you know “u” is a vowel letter. For your knowledge. These both sentences belong to simple present tense.
Simrah is a very good girl.
Here, being “good” is the quality of Simrah, so “good” is an adjective because “Simrah” is a noun. But when use “very”, then basically “very” is showing even the quality of “good”. Since “good” is an adjective so “very” is an adverb because it is describing an adjective (good).
Bilawal runs fast, which is good for us.
Saying that “which is good for us” is basically giving extra information about his quality of running fast. Hence “which is good for us” is an adverb clause.
Note:
Kindly note that mostly the words ending with “LY” are adverbs.
Examples:Quickly, nicely, clearly, sincerely etc.
The verbs which are being modified by the use of following adverbs.
I will come afterwards If you are busy now.
(Afterwards means later) She will think once again. (Again/ Once again)
Bilawal left one hour ago. (Ago) is an adverb.
I have already told you about her. (Already)
Stay away from bad boys. (Away) is an adverb too.
I get up early in the morning. (Early)
He is wearing someone else’s shirt. (Else) is an adverb.
Zainab said enough to him. (Enough) is an adverb too.
Do you ever go there? (Ever)
He plays far better than you. (Far)
Shumaila lives far away. (Far)
All these words written in brackets and given below are the adverbs.
Hardly, rarely, seldom, just, only, quite, never, often, at once, so, together etc all are adverbs.
Generally, an adverb has three degrees: Positive, Comparative, Superlative. But few adverbs do not have degrees e.g, “very”, “quite” etc.
