The Magic Of Noun

Since childhood, we have been taught that a noun is the name of a person, place or thing. This definition is not incorrect but we need to know a little more. Even if, for an instance we assume, this definition is correct, then why is the name of a dog or animal for that matter considered a noun! The fact is, name of any creature is a noun; be it a human or be it an animal.
Similarly, “Love” is an example of abstract noun. It’s not a name of person, place or thing, then why do we take it as a noun! There are lot many examples as such. Let’s understand.

Proper Noun

It is the name of specific creature, place or thing.

Defined with examples.

Bilawal  ( Name of a creature)

Marker Pen ( Name of a thing)

Nokia Mobile ( Name of a thing)

Dadu ( Name of a place)

Lareb Book ( Name of a thing)

Common Noun

It denotes the class of a creature, place or thing.

Suppose, there are two boys; Ahsanullah and Bilawal. What is the common in both? These both are boys. So “boy” is a common noun.

Let’s think about three states; Dehli, Kolkata and  Punjab. What is the common in these? These all are states. So “State is a common noun and Delhi, Kolkata and Punjab are names with specified. So these are Proper Nouns.

Let’s Discuss in detail

There are two trees. One is “Apple’s Tree” and second one is ” Mango’s Tree” What is the common in both? Tree is a common noun.
Apple’s and Mango’s specify the class of both things so both are Proper Nouns, because they are specified to what kind of trees are.

There are two mobiles. One is “Nokia” and Second one is “Samsung” What is the common in both? These are mobiles. So “Mobile” is a common but when  Samsung or Nokia’s word comes with the name of Mobile, then it will show the specified of what company’s mobile is. So Nokia Mobile is a Proper word.

These are two pens. One is “Ball Pen and second is “Dollar Pen” What is the common in both? “Pen” is a common word but when it is used with specified of what kind of pen is, as written “Dollar Pen or Ball Pen” is a Proper word.
